My dataset is too large to analyse in time, should I narrow the research question?

I have eight years of survey data across 12,000 respondents and two years left. I can realistically analyse maybe a third of it. My supervisor wants the full scope. Is narrowing the question defensible at this stage, or does it invalidate the ethics approval?
