A doctorate is a multi-year project with a supervisor relationship and a formal examination at the end, and most of its difficulty is structural rather than academic. These resources cover choosing and structuring a proposal, recovering when results contradict your expectations, preparing for the viva, funding and studentship applications, and the burnout that sets in around the middle year.

Answered questions
Frequently asked questions
My results contradict what I expected - is the project broken?
Not necessarily. Negative or unexpected results are findings, and a rigorous project often produces them. The failure mode is a supervisor who cannot accept the direction change, so bring evidence: what you expected, what you found, and two or three ways to reframe the question. If the design itself is flawed, that is a conversation to have early, not a crisis to hide.
What should a doctoral proposal contain?
A clear research problem, why it matters, what is already known and where the gap is, your method and why it fits the question, and a realistic timeline with milestones. Supervisors read hundreds of proposals, so the gap statement and the feasibility of the timeline do most of the work. Keep it to the length requested and avoid generic literature reviews.
How do I prepare for the viva?
Re-read your own thesis as if you had to defend every claim, and prepare answers for the questions you would ask a hostile examiner: why this method, why not the alternative, what are the limitations, what would you do differently. Most viva failures trace to not being able to explain your own decisions, not to weak research.
How do I handle a supervisor conflict?
Keep the disagreement specific and documented, and separate the relationship from the decision. Ask for the concern in writing, restate the decision you have made and why, and agree a review point. If nothing changes, your institution will have a research-integrity or postgraduate complaints process - using it early is far less damaging than letting it simmer.
