I am a sophomore Chemistry major currently drowning in my O-Chem II review. I've tried using traditional flashcards and re-reading my lecture notes, but the mechanisms keep getting mixed up in my head. Does anyone have a specific mnemonic system or visualization trick for keeping track of reagents and stereochemistry under time pressure?

Stop trying to memorize the reactions as isolated facts. Instead, group them by the "behavior" of the functional groups. Create a master map where you place a starting material in the center and draw arrows outward to every possible product it can form. This forces you to see the patterns in how reagents change a molecule, rather than just memorizing a list. Focus on the "electron push." If you understand where the nucleophile attacks and where the leaving group goes, the stereochemistry usually follows a logical rule. Draw the mechanisms by hand multiple times, but do it on a whiteboard or a large piece of paper. Physical movement helps lock in the spatial orientation of the molecules better than staring at a screen or a notebook. Set up a "blind test" system. Write just the starting material and the reagent on a blank sheet, then try to predict the product and the stereochemistry without looking at your notes. If you get stuck, mark that specific reaction with a red dot and prioritize it in your next session. This targets your weak spots so you don't waste time on things you already know. Consistency over the next ten days is key. Spend an hour every morning reviewing your map before diving into new practice problems.
