Why do papers often have a dedicated literature review section?
I have done a few research projects, and I have often simply cited a paper when I was going to use their work or model to build mine, or if a paper helped establish a context that highlighted the importance of the topic and was thus useful for an introduction. For context, this is in mathematics and theoretical physics.
However, many of my mentors, including college professors, AP Research, papers online, etc., have dedicated literature review sections. They spend pages on context behind the research, going into detail about the methods, observational sources, and disagreements behind the models they are using.
My questions are: Why is such a detailed literature review necessary? Why do we have to go into such depth on the models we are using? What is the purpose of the literature review section in real-world academic research papers? (I am using models as in mathematics and theoretical physics, where we are using previous theorems and mathematical models to build our own for the study’s purpose.)
