I hate to use an independent faculty position as the benchmark for “making it”. But if we were to play this game, are there people out there that quote on quote didn’t “make it”. I.e your dream job was a faculty position after your postdoc and you tried and tried and tried and just never fully locked one down. And so were forced to pivot into something else. From what I gather here, if you truly stick to your guns, you will eventually land a position, it just might not be at the place you imagined. But maybe there is a survivorship bias here who knows.
